Author Event: Maria C. Palmer, On the Rocks

Monday, April 29 at 7:00 PM

On the Rocks chronicles the real-life journey of restaurateur Joseph Costanzo Jr., from his rise to success in the 1990s as a owner of the highly acclaimed Primadonna Restaurant, radio host, columnist, and aspiring politician to his sharp fall in the early 2000s, ending in an investigation and a stint in federal prison. Costanzo is a complex character, whom readers will admire for his confidence and rebuke for his arrogance, will love for his generosity and despise for his egotism, and will learn from in both his attention to detail and lack thereof. This driven, not-your-average-Joe is an unforgettable character who achieves the seemingly impossible but can't help getting in his own way. Come along with Joe for a bumpy ride on the Rocks!

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event. Cash or check only.

More Stories From Ellis Island: Those Who Were Held
Presentation by GSBC Trustee, Fred J Voss

From 1892 to 1954, more than 12.5 million immigrants were processed through Ellis Island.  Most were processed without incident. But some immigrants found themselves detained due to mental or physical illness, because their paperwork was not in order, or because those who were due to receive them did not show.  Mr. Voss will tell their stories.

GSBC meetings and webinars are free and open to the public.  For more information about our society, visit our web site, here.

Creating a Compelling College Application: Virtual Program for HS Juniors

Tuesday, May 21, 7:00 PM

Stand Out for College is offering this Zoom presentation to help high school juniors and their parents understand how to use the summer productively to create a compelling college application.

They will cover the college application process including current admissions trends, writing the personal statement essay and supplemental essays, teacher recommendations and how students can position themselves to increase their chances for admission. They’ll discuss how the Supreme Court decision has impacted the college admissions process and how a student’s ability to express their insights, experiences and personal growth through their application essays are more important than ever before.

They will discuss application strategies including the advantages and disadvantages of early decision, early action and regular decision. They’ll review what factors students should consider in deciding whether or not to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) for test-optional colleges and universities. They’ll also discuss the different ways that students can be admitted to a particular school.

They will examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission.

They will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others.

This program is a detailed and strategic overview of what students should focus on to make their college applications compelling.

The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC. (www.standoutforcollege.com)

Tea @ 2 Book Club

Tuesday, August 6th at 2:00 pm

Join us to read and discuss The Pole by J.M. Coetzee.

From the Nobel Prize-winning author of Disgrace, a psychologically probing, compulsively readable novel about love and the mutability of human relationships. Renowned for his sparse yet powerful prose, J. M. Coetzee is unquestionably among the most influential—and provocative—authors of our time. With characteristic insight and a “brittle wit that forces our attention on the common terrors we don’t want to think about” (Washington Post), Coetzee here challenges us to interrogate our preconceptions not only of love, but of truth itself.

Titles will be available at the Circulation Desk (starting July 1). The eBook and audiobook of this title are also available on the Libby app.
