A Shakespeare Comedy to be performed at the Library

On Sunday, July 19, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey – Next Stage Ensemble will bring the classic words of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” alive with an abridged production at the Glen Rock Public Library.  The performance, to benefit the Friends and produced by the Arts Council is open to all area residents, whether or not they belong to the Library.  Weather permitting; the performance at 7pm will take place outside.  An after-performance reception to meet the actors is planned.  Underwriting, has been provided by the Glen Rock Savings Bank, a long-time supporter of the visual and performing arts in town through the Arts Council.

Tickets may be obtained in person at the Library, located at 315 Rock Road during regular business hours.  General admission is $5 and Friends Member admission is $4 for open seating.  Patron admission is $10 per person and includes a reserved seat and listing in the evening’s program.  This performance is recommended for children 12 and over.  For further information, please call 201.670.3970.

“The Taming of the Shrew,” one of Shakespeare’s most uproarious comedies.  A father is attempting to marry off his two daughters; however he will only marry his youngest if someone will marry his eldest, Katharina, the headstrong shrew.  It is alternately silly and razor-sharp, with various psychological torments doled out by Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona who takes up the challenge to court Katerina.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is one of the leading classics
performance groups in the nation.  The Next Stage Ensemble, part of the Shakespeare
Theatre’s Summer Professional Training program, was created to foster the work of
early-career actors, while serving New Jersey’s communities with exciting and
affordable live theatre.

This dramatic presentation is made possible by the Friends of the Library and the Glen Rock Arts Council.  The Friends Group was formed in 1982 to stimulate awareness of the Glen Rock Public Library as an informational, educational and cultural center for all people of all ages in the community.  In partnership with the Arts Council, the two groups have a fine record of bringing the visual and performing arts to the residents of Glen Rock through a variety of events designed to entertain and educate.
